TAKING VINTAGE SILVERWARE AND TURNING IT INTO JEWELRY.

A Little History

Spoon rings are said to have originated in the 17th century. Servants could not afford to have wedding rings made of precious metals so they would steal the silverware from the manor houses and turn them into wedding rings. - Robin Hood, who was known for stealing from the rich to give to the poor, is said to have given his beloved Maid Marian a ring made from a stolen spoon.

The tradition of making spoon rings continued for decades and reached a fever pitch in the late middle 20th century with the Hippie movement in the 1960s/1970s.

I myself fell in love with the many patterns and styles. It is amazing to me to think of who owned and used these pieces, some dating back to the 1800's. Mealtimes were ceremonious occasions, which often consisted of several courses of food, beautifully presented on fine pieces of silver with beautiful silverware.

Occasionally you will find me not using silverware to create my jewelry pieces, but there is history in the silverware that makes it a favorite of mine to work with.
